bush. >> reporter: we're live in the presidio where san francisco firefighters are mopping up a fire that charred about three acres. we'll tell you if any homes or blilds were -- buildings were threatened. a state-wide amber alert is in effect. and a fast-moving fire at a san jose storage facility. these are live pictures at the scene. we have a news crew headed there. "mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning. it's tuesday, august 6th. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. breaking news about heart surgery performed on former president george w. bush this morning. a spokesman for the former president said doctors in dallas inserted a stent after discovering a blockage in an artery during a routine

physical exam yesterday. the spokesman said the blockage was opened with no complications and that former president bush is expected to go home tomorrow. also new this morning, a fire burned several acres in the presidio. at one point, the fire threatened a national cemetery. ktvu's tara moriarty has been live at the fire seen since 4:30. we understand that firefighters faced several challenges putting this fire out. >> reporter: definitely. water was one of them. there's very limited resources here. you can see there's a fire hydrant. that's where crews have been coming and getting their water. they've been trucking it through the main gates of the cemetery there. flames broke out around 2:00 a.m. the call came in at 2:30. we were only feet from the flames. it raced up a hill on the southern edge of the national cemetery. there were embers of flying and hot spots crews were trying to put out when we arrived at

3:30. the fire did not go into the cemetery but it burned trees and bushes around the border, close to lincoln and mcdowell avenue. >> the terrain is steep right in here. just basically the water supply was our problem. we figured out we -- we're shuttling water. we have a line around the thick and we're -- thing and we're popping it up. >> the presidio has a lot of green space, a lot of green areas. this is one of the green areas. >> reporter: not threatening any homes or structures? >> no, again, it's contained. we should be pretty clear soon we hope. >> i don't think we can make it that far. >> reporter: trenches from construction, they needed cross over to get to the fire as well as poison oak. now, an arson investigator is on scene trying to determine

exactly what sparked this fire. we saw a truck come out here if we come back out here live, maybe about ten minutes ago. that was the last fire crew we saw. we're thinking that most of the fire is out now. again, they are mopping it up and clearing the scene. we're live in the presidio, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. we're also following breaking news from san jose. there's a big fire burning at a storage facility. you can see the flames from highway 280. ktvu's janine de la vega just got there. what's going on? where are you and what's happening, janine? >> reporter: i'm on felipe avenue near 101 and story road. you can see it's still an active seen. there are a ton of firefighters here. you can see they are spraying water into this two-story public storage unit. up above, you can see there is white smoke billowing in the air. it's still a very active scene

here. i spoke with the firefighter who said that they still haven't gotten this knocked down. we do know that this fire went to two alarms. it started at about 6:20 this morning. at one point, they thought that a second fire had started on the next street over because of this. it was just all of the smoke billowing in the air and there was some confusion about that. but just one fire here that they are still actively working. i can tell you that there are no injuries reported and we're just waiting for a media person from the fire department to come on scene to try to tell us how soon will they have this knocked down. just to kind of get the details of how this possibly could have started. we'll continue to monitor the situation and let you know as soon as we have an update. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, janine. 7:05. a state-wide amber alert has been issued for two children believed to be abducted from

san diego county. police say the man who took them, set fire to his house, killing the children's mother and an unidentified child. it's not clear if the suspect has both children with them or if one of them died in the fire. police say he was in a platonic relationship with the mother. the children are 16-year-old hanna anderson and ethan. both have blond hair. the suspect, identified as 40- year-old james lee dimaggio. police say he could be heading towards canada or texas. dimaggio believed to be driving a blue 2013 four-door nissan versa. here is ea photo of the car similar to the suspect's car. it's the same picture that police in southern california are showing to the public. the car has a california license plate, the number is 6 wcu 986. if you see that car, call the police immediately.

7:06. a 13-year-old sunnyvale boy is in juvenile hall accused of exposing himself to a woman jogging on the stevens creek trail in mountain view. the runner noticed the boy riding his bike. he rode ahead of her, stopped near the exit and tried to block her path while exposing himself. she threatened to take his picture and called the police. police found the boy at wism park and arrested him for indecent exposure. state lawmakers in california will discuss the potential use of drones. the committee is holding the hearing on domestic drones. some law enforcement agencies across the country are using the pilotless aircraft for surveillance. but opponents are concerned about privacy issues. the federal government wants to cut down on the number of pedestrians killed while texting. it's offering grants to large cities with what it calls lots

of distracted walkers. more than 1500 pedestrians were treated in emergency rooms after being injured while using a cell phone or similar device in 2011. san francisco is the only bay area city eligible to apply for one of the grants. >> i've been guilty of that, tori. in the parking lot, you are checking your phone -- >> yeah. and you are moving. sal, things are not moving well around the toll plaza and the bay bridge? >> no. this is day number two, a bad commute at the toll plaza and also on the bridge. it's very slow getting onto the bridge. the metering lights are on extra slow because of a stalled truck on the san francisco side, almost off the bridge but not quite in the right lane. kind of like yesterday, although not as bad. we only have one lane blocked. it's still serving the cause to a traffic jam. 30 minutes plus at the bay bridge toll plaza. this morning we also have

traffic on 880 looking good, thoi, if you want to get down to the san mateo bridge. southbound 880 is the not all that bad. slowing from 238 to westbound 92. we're looking at westbound 92. it looks good, dumbarton bridge is moving well to the peninsula. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. a very good morning. sleeping weather is fantastic. that's for sure. these temperatures are cool. you know this can't last. this is too soon. someone asked if they could put their summer clothing away. no, no, no. models have been very consistent with the low keeping us oh, so cool. it will move somewhere in between eureka and cape mendocino. but probably not until thursday. in the meantime, our average temperatures are in the 60s, 70s and almost 90. the forecasted temperatures, 60 in san francisco. that's below. again, the last 70 or higher was july 4th.

oakland, 65. livermore, 78. santa rosa, 72. 50ss, 60s, coast and bay. tough to budge that pattern. 60s all over the bray. inland temperatures -- over the bay. inland temperatures. 60s, 70s very low 80s. i think brentwood, antioch, oakley, morgan hill, gilroy will be in the low to mid-80s. low fog, drizzle is in place. it looks like the cloud deck is not going anywhere until maybe thursday when the low goes through. 50s on the temperatures. a really cool pattern. i've had gusts to 30 at fairfield. west at oakland. from sfo. san jose says we have an easterly breeze here. different down in the santa clara valley. mostly it's an onshore breeze. this low again doesn't go

anywhere until about thursday. high pressure trying to build back in, maybe in the extended outlook. but today, fog, drizzle, cool. fog until about noon. breezy for many of the inland areas. upper 80s. these are coming down, a lot of these temperatures and a lot of 70s in areas that shouldn't much better than this -- should be much better than this. walnut creek, 77. alameda, 63. 70 san jose, read hillview, 77. 50s on the coast or 60s. 60s on part, of the peninsula or low 70s. palo alto at 71. cool pattern into thursday. it looks like once the low goes through, weak high pressure comes in for the inland temperatures by the weekend. 7:11. happening now, firefighters in southern california are fighting a growing wildfire. it's threatening homes near lake elsinore in riverside county. it started yesterday morning and 1500 acres have burned. people living in the area are

now under mandatory evacuation orders. there is a wildfire in the tuolumne county area. that fire has burned 275,000 acres. two campgrounds in the area have been evacuated as a precaution. later today, the arte mess yacht racing team will sail in the challenger's trial in the san francisco bay. it will be the team's first race since the tragic death of andrew "bart" simpson. he died on may 9th. the sailors will have simpson on their minds this afternoon when they hit the starting line. overhauling the mortgage system. not a small job. what the government could do to get out of the lending business. a sleepover turned deadly. hue a python snuck -- how a

a lot of gray sky. that eqauing a fog bank. not better than 60s and 70s. 7:15. new this morning, the military trial of the army psychiatrist accused in the fort hood mass shooting just began about ten minutes ago. major nadal hasan is charged with a shooting rampage that killed 13 people and injured more than 30 others back in 2009. we just got a quote from the prosecutor, he tells the jury he planned to kill as many soldiers as he could. now, hasan is representing himself. many wounded in the attack are expected to testify.

hasan wanted to argue that he carried out the shooting in defense of muslims fighting american soldiers in afghanistan. but the judge denied that strategy. he faces the death penalty if convicted. jurors are scheduled to begin deliberations in the racketeering and murder trial of james whitey bulger. the 83-year-old is accused of taking part in 19 murders in the '70s and '80s. along with extortion, money laundererring and -- laundering and he faces life in prison ifth canned. happening now, president obama is leaving the white house for a trip to arizona. that's where he will lay out his plans this afternoon to overhaul the housing and mortgage industries. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom. senators already laid out their plans to do the same thing. kyla? >> reporter: dave, the president's proposals are largely in line with the

senate's bipartisan housing and mortgage reform plan already in the works. that includes phasing out fannie mae and freddie mac. they received nearly $200 billion in a tax payer funded bailout back in 2008. president obama will also push for immigration reform to increase home values. the white house says immigrants accounted for almost 40% of new homeowners nationwide between 2000 and 2010. in that same time period, in california, immigrants accounted for more than 80% of the growth in homeowners. how the administration plans to help homeowners better understand when i see you next. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. tomorrow, president obama takes part in an online question-and-answer session on the real estate website zillo. you can submit questions online.

this event begins at 10:00 a.m. our time. it will be moderated by the ceo. 7:1. it will soon be -- 7:17. it will soon be illegal for people to live in their car in palo alto. last night the city council approved the ban. the city says the ban will be enforced on a complaint-only basis. police officers will work with violaters to try to link them to social services. fines could be as much as $1,000. violaters could face six months in jail. in san francisco, a new law that bans sleeping and campers overnight in certain neighborhoods seems to be working. the ban went into effect three months ago in areas like the dog patch neighborhood. vans parking on designated streets from midnight and 6:00 a.m. and according to the chronicle, campers, pickup trucks and rvs are gone.

police say two boys, a 7- year-old and 5-year-old were sleeping at their friend's house. a friend lives above an exotic pet store and police say the snake got out of the enclosure, crawled through the ventilation system and roo the sh -- and into the room where the boys were sleeping. a man who sells exotic animals at another store is rare. >> it was probably underfed. it just has to be really hungry and not in good condition. >> oh, boy. after that happened, the python was captured. the police have it in custody. they've launched a criminal investigation. i guess it was the owner of the pet store who lived upstairs. there's a lot of questions that still need to be answered. it's mostly cloudy around the bay area this morning. will it clear up? up next, steve paulson will have the forecast for your neighborhood.

criminal chaumpgs are expected to be filed against a man accused of plowing his car into a crowd of people on the venice beach boardwalk. the driver, nathan campbell, turned himself into police shortly after the crash and was arrested on suspicion of murder. an italian woman on her honeymoon died and her husband is overcome with grief.

[inaudible] >> 16 others were hurt. police are still investigating the circumstances. campbell has prior arrests in california and colorado and a history of drug and alcohol abuse. the academic research of the university of california will soon be posted online and be available for free. it will be the largest university system to open its publications to the public. academic research is usually published in journals that have paid subscriptions. thousands of papers will be available november 21st. sal? >> we had a stalled truck carrying lumber stalled in the lanes for a long time. they got it out there finally. but traffic is still very slow at the bay bridge toll plaza.

the good news, it's not as bad as it was yesterday when we had the lanes blocked. all of the lanes are cleared t will take a while -- cleared. it will take a while to unwind. this is a look at 237. if you are driving in contra costa county, the slowest traffic is on highway 4 in antioch from antioch to pittsburg. 680 looks pretty good from concord to walnut creek. 7:24. let's go to steve. a lot of low clouds in place. a couple of are -- a couple of people have tweeted me. spweather if you want to tweet me. this is a very cool week for us. no doubt about it. temperatures, a good, 6, 12 degrees below average. there is a lot of gray to go around. that low is the reason why. pretty impressive to have that. napa at 75.

livermore, 83. palo alto, 74. today we'll hold onto 180. livermore, 78. napa downtown, 73. 50s. these temperatures have not moved all morning long because everyone is under the gray blanket of the overcast conditions. the low looks like it will move in around -- around thursday probably between eureka and cape mendocino. that should be enough to chew up the fog. until then, there's a lot of gray over the bay. inland temperatures, 70s and 80s. these are well below average. you know things have to pop somewhere down the road. cooler pattern into thursday. it looks warmer. not a lot. just getting near average to slightly below for the upcoming weekend. 7:25. breaking news from the south bay, we told you about this fast-moving fire. it's at that san jose storage facility. we'll get a live report from the scene. >> reporter: and bracing for a

we want to update the breaking news from the south bay we first reported about 30 minutes ago. a fast-moving fire is still burning at a san jose storage facility. ktvu's janine de la vega just got new information from firefighters at the scene. and janine joins us live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. this was a two-alarm fire but in the last 30 minutes it's been upgraded to a three-alarm fire. you can see, it's still very active. we're still on felipe avenue. this is near the 101/280 connector ramp. there's about 50 firefighters on the scene. we have chopper 2 up. from up above you can get an aerial view blaf it looks like. you can see the activity there as well as white smoke still sort of rising up from the roof here. it's a two-story facility that's burning right now. we know we have 22 engines here

on the scene. there was a big response because when the call first came in before 6:30 this morning. there was a report of two fires in the same area. one on felipe, one or olen avenue. firefighters determined it was the same fire. there was some confusion because there was so much smoke. we're told this fire started in one unit on the first floor, and it's spread to three other units. it's jumping quickly. the firefighters are telling us what they are concerned about is actually what is burning inside the unit. >> it's always a danger because we don't know what folks have packed into their units. there could be hazmat, there could be munitions inside. we don't know. >> reporter: at this point, it's unknown how this fire

started. we know that they got several 911 calls. we don't know if there was actually somebody in one of the storage units that burned that actually called it in and ran away. a lot of unknowns right now. as far as we know, there are no injuries. let's go back out to a live picture where you can see firefighters are still working on this blaze and trying to contain it and put it out. last of the time i spoke to the firefighter in charge of the media, he told me it's still not under control. at this point, they are doing what's called trench cuts. they are using a saw to cut in between the walls of this storage facility and that's so they can allow it to vent out, at least help get this fire out and to knock it down. we'll continue to be here and monitor the situation to see when they actually have it under control. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine.

7:31. developing news, a statewide amber alert is in effect after a very disturbing incident involving children in san diego county. brian flores is live in berkeley where the amber alert signs are lit up all over the place. brian? >> reporter: they are. they are lit up the bay area. many commuters may be on their way to work, school. may be seeing signs notifying they have em-- notifying them of a child abduction and the car description of the man who may have taken the two kids. take a good look at the man. the deputies say james lee dimaggio is on the run. 5'9", 150 pounds and 40 years old. deputies say he's accused of killing 44-year-old christina anderson and an unidentified child at his home in eastern san diego county. they believe that dimaggio lit the house on fire.

investigators also believe that dimaggio and anderson had some type of close, platonic relationship. investigators also believe that dimaggio took off with anderson's two kids. they are identified as 8-year- old ethan anderson and 16-year- old hannah anderson. keep your eyes out for dimaggio's car. investigators believe he may be driving a blue four-door nissan versa with the california license plate number 6 wcu 986. again, 6 wcu 986. now, the latest we're hearing from investigators is that dimaggio and the kids may be headed to either texas or even canada which is why they are asking bay area commuters if they see anything to let them know. we're live in berkeley, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:33. we have continuing coverage on the potential strikes that could impact mass transit in the area. we'll have an update on the situation with b.a.r.t. in a moment.

but first, now a.c. transit workers are threatening to go on strike as early as tomorrow. alex savidge is live in oakland where he talked to riders about how they would be affected. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. if a.c. transit workers walk off the job at midnight, there would be no bus service tomorrow. a lot of riders i'm talking to this morning, very concerned about this. i spoke with one man who said he takes the bus every day. he has no other way to get around. >> kind of -- i won't be able to get around. my wife won't be able to get around. it will be real ugly. >> reporter: unless a settlement can be reached by the end of the day, a.c. transit bus drivers and other employees will go on strike starting tomorrow. a.c. transit managers negotiated that union represents about 92. 1600 workers. now, this contract dispute

centers around salary issues, healthcare costs and rest breaks for employees. on the issue of pay, at least according to a.c. transit managers, the two sides are somewhat close. one bus driver told me she and her fellow employees are simply asking for what's fair. >> my terms in negotiations are hopeful that they can come back to the table and give us at least half of what we're asking for. at least half. we're actually making back to 1999 of pay, basically, and everything else is going up around us. gas, food. >> reporter: now, about 180,000 people use the a.c. transit system every day in both alameda and contra costa counties. many people, of course, rely on the bus to get to work and to get to school. the union and a.c. transit managers will work and negotiate throughout the day in hopes of reaching a settlement

before the strike deadline. riders are hoping they can do just that. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. now, as for b.a.r.t., trains are running this morning as the two sides in that labor dispute prepare to prepare their cases to a board of inquiry tomorrow. the critical hearing will determine the next step in the bitter labor dispute affecting millions of bay area commuters. the three-member board will hear from both management and union leaders and then report to governor jerry brown. the governor will decide whether to call for a cooling- off period up to 60 days. the board itself will have very limited authority or power. >> we don't need investigation. we need b.a.r.t. it do the right thing and get the job done. >> california's cooling off measure has been used five times in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute since 1988. four times, those cooling off periods ended with a contract

agreement. but 1997, the 60-day cooling off period was followed by a six-day b.a.r.t. strike. meanwhile, brawmpt says it will have to -- b.a.r.t. says it will have to pay for the shuttle buses it hired in the event of a strike yesterday. we showed you the scene from walnut creek b.a.r.t. station. the chartered buses were ready. b.a.r.t. sent an e-mail to drivers late sunday night adviseing them the strike -- advises -- advises them the strike was off. but they didn't get the message -- advising them the strike was off. but they did not get the message. the saber system went down last night and airlines delayed flights. passengers we talked with at san francisco international airport say it took a long time to find out just what was going on. >> this is horrible.

we arrive twoer hours early and we're not getting any communication. system is done, that's it. >> the saker system was back -- the saber system was back online. eventually all flights took off for their destinations. the airports in san jose, oakland and sfo, all saying the operations are back to normal this morning. 7:38. want to check in with sal. see how traffic is trying to approach the bay bridge in the east bay. >> well, i have bad news. [laughter] >> one of our viewers got to work and said she saw a stalled a.c. transit bus on the upper deck. i thought no. and then we heard the reports from the chp. it's still there. there was a stalled lumber struck up there for a while. day two of the odyssey known as the bay bridge commute into san francisco, it's not as bad as yesterday. but certainly, it is a longer commute. you did see it's -- you can see it's barely moving here.

almost an hour. yesterday, some people said it took them two hours to get into the city at 10:00 in the morning. it's not like that. but it's still pretty slow. let's take a look at the commute in contra costa county. that traffic has been moderately heavy. 680 is slow from treat to pleasant hill down near rut rutgear road. let's go to steve. there's still a westerly breeze for some. a blustery day for others. low right here that i'm standing in front of. i will give you a et abouter look at it. right there. right there. there it is. not bad for this time of year. that's keeping the fog in place. and that's also going to hang out here until about thursday. i think it will move through. it keeps our temperatures very cool. santa rosa, 83. these are the average temperatures. san jose, 82. livermore, 89. oakland, 74 -- 74. 72 in santa rosa. san jose, 73.

livermore, 78. oakland only 65 and san francisco another tough, tough, cool morning. average is 67. in case you are getting back. it has not been 70 or higher since july4th. that's a long, long time. today's forecasted high is 60 degrees. another very cool day not only at the coast but in san francisco. a cool day. a little bit of mist and driz -- and drizzle. a low cloud deck is in place. it's making a push and probably it looks like thursday is the coolest day as the low moves from shasta/lassen. that should be enough to schu -- chew up the fog. fair fild, a west breeze. santa rosa, location getting a little variable. but the general trend is a westerly breeze. once that fog burns off and then the breeze picks up. that's the pattern we're in. low clouds not going anywhere.

the forecast shows it retreats very slowly back to the coast or something and then tonight, i think it comes flying right back in. it might make it again out towards sacramento tomorrow. if you have a smartphone. it probably has the -- has the same forecast. temperatures might come down a couple of more degrees on wednesday thursday. petaluma, 72, san rafael, 73. vallejo, crockett, that's a cool pattern. 63 alameda. pittsburg only 80. 77 pleasanton. san ramon/danville, 74, santa clara, to 73 downtown. low 80s morgan hill to gilroy. a very cool pattern for much of the coast and also the bay. peninsula mainly low 70s. not much change here the next couple of days. the inland temperatures might

come out. bottom out on thursday. it looks warmer as we go into the weekend especially away from the coast. 19 minutes before 8:00. >> there are new details this morning. about a possible motive in a deadly stabbing at a hardware store in el sobrante. a customer stabbed an employee at oliver's ace hardware store 17 times after the employee tried to call 911. that employee was trying to report the customer had stolen spray paint and was painting his face with black and silver colors. police say the customer also made religious references. the victim of the stabbing has been identified as daniel joseph stone of pinole. the suspected attacker has been charged with murder and is in jail in martinez. the fbi is searching for a group of men that may be responsible for as many as five bank robberies in the bay area. the latest robbery happened at

the first republic bank. the surveillance photos were taken during bank robberies in millbrae earlier this year. the men are usually armed and wore thick jackets, clothes to cover their faces. why electricity was nearly shut off at the home of nelson mandela. all americans need to get out now. why the state department has given that order today in a middle east country.

new data was released showing that home prices are rising shortly and the u.s. trade deficit has narrowed sharply in june. despite this positive news on the economy, stocks are slipping in early trading on wall street. investors finding little reason to extend a rally that's taken indexes to record highs. the dow is down 114. the nasdaq down 28. s&p down 10. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg is speaking out in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. >> please give a warm welcome to mark zuckerberg. >> he appeared last night in san francisco for a screening of a movie based on the real- life experience of an illegal immigrant in the u.s. he says this goes beyond just getting more high-tech visas for foreign workers in silicon valley. >> this is something we believe

blocking lanes. now things bet -- now things are looking better. let's go back to the desk. topping our news at 8:00, breaking news from the south bay. we first told but this an hour ago. a fast-moving fire at a san jose storage facility. janine de la vega is out there talking to firefighters. what are they saying? how is it going out there? >> reporter: well, the fire is still not under control. we just got an update that they hope it will be under control in the next 30 minutes. behind me, you can see there's still smoke coming out of the building. there's a cluster of firefighters there. there's also smoke again, rising above. a lot of the reason for that is because they have been cutting holes in the roof to vent it out. now, i want to go to some earlier footage we took this morning that shows chopper 2. it gives you sort of an aerial view to show how big the scene is. about 60 firefighters and 22 engines arrived here at about

6:30 this morning. there was a concern because it was really unknown what was burning inside those units. that can make for a very dangerous situation. i'm joined now by cast kasten clause -- by captain clause. there was concern that the second story may collapse. can you tell us about that? >> as crews entered the second story, the floor was spongy and weak and felt it may give way due to the smoke and flames below. we kept crews from going interior on the lower floors and the upper floors. so our plan of action right now is we're fighting the fire from the adjacent unit upstairs. we have to cut through a wall to knock that down. >> reporter: i understand so far four units have been

affected. they've been burned. is it still spreading? >> no. we've pretty much knocked down the fire. there's really tight spots that because of the access issues and the safety hazard that are within the units and also a lot of -- a lot of personal items that are inside. >> reporter: you were mentioning you saw a car in one of units back there? is that a -- you don't know what is inside. >> it can be very dangerous. we don't know what's in the units. once we get in, we break lox and there could be anything from hazardous materials and we saw a car inside that has a lot of items in there that could cause issues for the firefighters. it was noted earlier that crews weren't wearing their masks at the time. but we were pretty much in a defensive operation. soap they were conserving air just in case they had to go

blocked off. weet haven't seen engines come inside -- we haven't seen engines come inside the gates. it's impossible to tell from park police being so vigilant. you can see the crew pulling up here. now, earlier this morning, around 3:30, our news crews were able to get within feet of the flames. the call came in at 2:30. there were embers flying and hot spots that crews were trying to snuff out. the fire did not go into the cemetery but it did burn around three, four acres lows to lincoln and mcdowell avenue. >> i was just coming up the hill. it was burning pretty good. it must have started around the area here. wouldn't doe know what the cause is. i'm sure it will be -- we don't know what the cause is. i'm sure it will be under investigation. >> this is the first one that i can remember. i've been here 13 years. pretty unusual. we get a lot of fog.

that means not much fire. >> reporter: no homes or buildings were threatened. not only did crews have limited access to water, they had to cross headstones, trenches near the edge of the cemetery and the terrain is quite steep. there's also poison oak. arson investigators are out there trying to figure out what sparked the fire. you can see one of the trucks that took off from the fire hydrant with some more water. we understand that the department of forestry has been called in to inspect some of these trees. they are tall trees. they want to make sure that there's no fire inside the trees here. lincoln avenue has been opened. it was pretty much closed all morning until about five minutes ago. park police kept extra tight security around here making sure the fire crews had access in and out of the cemetery. we'll let you know if arson investigators release the source of this fire. for now, reporting live from

the presidio, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a w anti-gang unit is on patrol in sni san jose to try to crack down. there are 12 officers and two sergeants dedicated to the gang- suppression unit. they will target areas known for gang violence. adding a full-time gang unit is the latest effort to crack down on gangs. >> you we a track on the gang members, what trends they have, who they hang out. >> with the first phase of the crackdown started in june when 40 extra police officers were added to the streets. another 24 officers joined them last month but the police union says the department is still short staffed and a new anti- gang unit is made up of officers taken away from other duties. tonight, cities across the bay area and around the country, in fact, will celebrate national nightout. this is video from last year's event in oakland.

story from yesterday, when a big rig burst into flames off the bay bridge. caltrans inspected the bridge and said there's no damage. this happened near the fifth street exit in san francisco about 3:45 yesterday morning. the chp closed down two lanes of traffic. took about 12 hours before they were open again. a truck driver said he was heading toward south san francisco to make a delivery when his tire blew and the truck caught fire. that was the problem yesterday. there's another problem this morning on the bay bridge. let's get an update on the situation with ktvu's sal castanedo. >> yeah, you know, it's been kind of a bad one this morning for the bay bridge. i want to show you just how slow it is around the macarthur maze. it's an hour plus delay. it's not like yesterday when we had almost impossible traffic. today it's slow. it's improving, though. they got the yaws bus and the -- a.c. transit bus and and -- this

really impacts a lot. >> reporter: a.c. transit management negotiated last into the night with members of the transit union, local 192. they went until about midnight last night. that union represents about 1600 workers and unless a settlement can be reached, unless they can agree upon a contract, a.c. transit bus drivers and other employees will go on strike starting tomorrow. this contract dispute all centers around issues of salary, healthcare costs and rest breaks for employees. on the issue of pay, the two sides do seem to be somewhat close, at least according to a.c. transit. this morning one bus driver told me she doesn't want a strike to happen. she's worried about what her regular riders will do. >> if we can't get them to work and a lot of times they can't afford b.a.r.t. they have to ride the bus.

is in the hospital in dallas recovering from heart surgery. he underwent surgery this morning after doctors discovered a blocked artery. doctors inserted a stint which is a mesh piece used to prop open arteries typically clogged by cholesterol. the blocked artery was discovered during his routine physical yesterday. in a statement this morning, a spokesman said the former president is feeling good and is encouraging everyone to get their regular checkups. the former president has no previous history of heart problems and is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. a statewide amber alert has been issued for two children believed to be abducted from san diego county. they are identified as hanna anderson and ethan anderson. police say lee dimaggio.

two and a half hours. i'm joined by captain elcourt by the san jose fire department. what's the challenge in getting this officially under control? >> good morning. the challenge is, it's a concrete building. and it's burned so hot that the damage to the walls and the roof above the unit makes it difficult for us to access, actually completely put out the fire. we do have it under control, in the fact that it's contained and not spreading. it's still smoldering. we're still using water to finally extinguish it. >> really the challenge is -- i know so far, four units are damaged and burned. it's not the actual building burning. >> it's a concrete building. concrete doesn't burn as much as it gets damaged by fire. there are two downstairs unit and two upstairs unit.
